Abstract

Astrophysical fluids feature sheer dynamic ranges and high density contrast. Following the motion of fluid parcels, Lagrangian hydrodynamic methods can easily cope with complex fluid geometry and extreme compressions. They can also treat gas self-gravity naturally and efficiently by summing up mutual gravity via a tree algorithm. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), the prototype of Lagrangian methods, has been widely employed in cosmological structure and galaxy formation simulations. However, SPH can be numerically diffusive, and recently proposed novel meshless methods show better conservation properties. I will introduce the meshless finite method (MFM) with applications in planet formation studies. It is ideal for studying systems with complex geometry, such as in distorted circumstellar disks and colliding planetary objects. It also provides hope for simulating subsonic magnetized turbulence without introducing mesh grids. A module for radiative hydrodynamics is currently under development by collaborators and myself.

CV

Dr. Hongping Deng got his BS in physics from Tsinghua University in 2014 and a Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics from the University of Zurich in 2019. He then carried out independent postdoc research, supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship, at DAMTP, the University of Cambridge, before joining SHAO in Feb 2022.
