Abstract:
The binary neutron star event GW170817, for the first time, combines gravitational-wave and electromagnetic-wave observations. This breakthrough paves the way for multi-messenger astronomy. However, a crucial aspect that remains unresolved is the direct detection of the signals from the post-merger remnant, which lies within the kilohertz band. In this talk, I will first discuss interesting science cases in this frequency band, and our design studies for a targeted ground-based detector for kilohertz gravitational-wave sources.
CV:
Dr. Yang obtained his PhD from Caltech in 2013 and worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Perimeter Institute from 2013 to 2016 and Princeton University in 2016-2017. He is currently an associate faculty of the Perimeter Institute and an associate Professor at Guelph University. Dr. Yang has worked on topics ranging from astrophysical sources for ground and space-based gravitational wave detections, Dark Matter searches, tests of General Relativity, strong-gravity phenomena, and advanced detector designs. Dr. Yang is the group lead of the Perimeter-Guelph-Waterloo group of the LISA Consortium and a member of the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration.
