Abstract

The gravitational-wave background (GWB) in the nHz is usually believed to originate from supermassive black holes binaries (SMBHBs) in the universe. For a long time, the recognition of the Hellings-Downs (HD) curve has been considered as a smoking-gun for the detection of GWB by Pulsar Timing Arrays. However, gravitational waves from different SMBHBs can interfere with each other, causing the spatial correlation to deviate from the HD curve. In an optimistic estimation, our results indicate  the optimal statistic signal-to-noise ratio becomes 6.6 +/- 1.7 in evidence for detecting a GWB through incorporating interference in NANOGrav 15-year data set. CV
