SHAO Astrophysics Colloquia

Title: Supernova feedback: how is the gas regulated on sub-galactic scale?

Speaker: Miao Li (Columbia University, USA)

Time & Place: Wednesday, 3:00pm, September 16th, Lecture Hall, 3rd floor

Abstract: Lambda-CDM cosmology shows great success, but it remains a challenge to reproduce Milky Way-like galaxies from ab initio simulations. The solution may lie in small-scale feedbacks that cannot be resolved. New techniques observe galaxies on kpc/sub-kpc scale from redshift 0 to 6, providing fresh insights into galaxy formation. This is a great opportunity to study the physical processes on these scales. Supernovae (SN), the most energetic stellar feedback mechanism, play the leading role in shaping the interstellar medium (ISM) on sub-galactic scale. I will introduce our hydro-simulations on how SN regulate a multi-phase ISM, and how a multi-phase ISM, in return, affects SN feedback. I will discuss its implications for galaxy formation and evolution.
