Title: A short introduction to gravitational wave and gravitational wave astrophysics
Speaker: Prof. Youjun Lu (NAOC)
Time: 3 PM, Dec. 01 (Thursday)
Location: Lecture Hall, 3rd floor
Abstract: Gravitational wave, ripples in the fabric of spacetime, is a major prediction of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) and is one of the most profound nature of gravity. LIGO team recently announced the first direct detection of gravitational wave, emitted from a binary black hole merger, which not only confirms the prediction of GR but also opens an unprecedented new window ontothe cosmos--a window of gravitational wave astronomy. In this Lecture, I will give a short introduction to gravitational wave and those methods to detect gravitational waves. I will also briefly overview the field of gravitational wave astrophysics and talk about the prospects of this field.

Title: The Age and Structure of the Galactic Bulge from Mira Variables
Abstract:
Catchpole et al. 2016 study the Milky Way Bulge structure as a function of age using a sample of ~8700 Mira Variables from the OGLE and Macho surveys combined with independent observations. Distances to these stars are derived from a period-luminosity relation together with corrections for interstellar and circumstellar extinction. It is shown that both in the inner and outer regions of the Bulge the longer period Miras, tracers of an intermediate age population (~5 Gyrs and younger), give evidence of a tilted bar-like structure. They also show a clumpy structure possibly part of an X-structure. The distribution of the shorter period (metal-rich globular cluster age) Miras, appears spheroidal in the outer bulge.
